Coffea arabica, also known as the Arabian coffee plant, is a popular houseplant that is native to Ethiopia and other parts of East Africa. It is a small tree that can grow up 3 meters tall when grown outdoors, but as a houseplant, it is typically kept trimmed to a more manageable size.
The leaves of Coffea arabica are glossy and dark green, with a pointed oval shape. The leaves grow in pairs on opposite sides of the stem and can reach up to 15 centimeters in length. The plant can also produce small white flowers that have a delicate, sweet fragrance, followed by red or purple berries that contain the coffee beans, when mature.

Care/Details
Coffea arabica is a relatively easy plant to care for, but it does require specific growing conditions to thrive. It prefers bright, indirect sunlight, so it should be placed near a window that receives plenty of light but not direct sun. It also needs consistently moist soil, but it is important not to overwater it, as this can lead to root rot.
- Environment – Ideally placed in a light environment, however, not in direct sun during months with strong sunshine. Temperatures between 18 to 30 degrees Celsius are recommended. Make sure to avoid cold breezes from open windows or doors during cold days.
- Watering – Water once a week and make sure not to overwater, let the plant absorb all water within few hours. If any water left, you should pour the rest out. Try with 100-200 ml for midsize pots (10-12 ø cm pots) and 50 ml for mini plants (6cm). After a period of days, the soil will start to dry up, here you shall make sure the soil stays a bit moist, since letting the soil completely dry out can cause brown tips on the leaves. During winter periods with lower growth, you can wait a bit more between watering, however with the soil still moist.
- Leaves care – Leaves care – It is common for outer leaves to become yellow at some point, wait for the leaf stem to loosen slightly from the plant before removal, do this with care to avoid harming the plant. If you notice the leaves turning during the day, this is perfectly normal since they seek towards the sun.
- Fertilizer – This can be administered once monthly during spring and summer periods. During winter the plant are not as likely to endure growth, therefore, the plant will not absorb the fertilizer.
