Platycerium Bifurcatum – Ø12 cm

Platycerium Bifurcatum, also known as the Staghorn fern, is a unique and fascinating houseplant that is native to Australia, Southeast Asia, and other parts of the tropics. It gets its name from the distinctive shape of its fronds, which resemble the antlers of a deer or elk.

The Staghorn fern has two types of fronds: basal fronds and fertile fronds. The basal fronds are flat and shield-shaped, and they grow close to the surface of the planting medium or the mounting board. These fronds provide a sturdy base for the plant and absorb water and nutrients from the surrounding environment. The fertile fronds, on the other hand, are long and antler-like, and they emerge from the center of the plant. These fronds produce spores that are necessary for reproduction.

Overall, the Staghorn fern is a fascinating and visually striking houseplant that is sure to draw attention and admiration from anyone who sees it. With the proper care and growing conditions, it can thrive for many years and become a true conversation piece in any home.

The Staghorn fern is an epiphytic plant, which means that it grows on other plants or surfaces rather than in soil. In nature, it can be found growing on tree trunks, rocks, or even man-made structures. As a houseplant, it is typically mounted on a board or hung in a basket or on a wall. It prefers bright, indirect light and should be kept in a humid environment to mimic its natural habitat. Watering can be done by misting the plant or soaking the board or basket it is mounted on. Fertilization can be done sparingly during the growing season.

    • Environment – Ideally placed in a light environment, however, not in direct sun during months with strong sunshine. Temperatures between 18 to 30 degrees Celsius are recommended.

    • Watering – Water once a week and make sure not to overwater, let the plant absorb all water within a few hours. If any water is left, you should pour the rest out. Try with 100-200 ml for midsize pots (10-12 ø cm pots) and 50 ml for mini plants (6cm). After a period of days, the soil or moss will start to dry up, here you can wait a day or two to water. For you who like to care a bit more for your plants; if you during the year have the possibility to place the plant in a humid environment this is recommended. You can also use a lurk warm water mist during the week.

    • Leaves care – It is common for outer leaves to become yellow at some point, wait for the leaf stem to loosen slightly from the plant before removal, do this with care to avoid harming the plant. If you notice the leaves dripping this is not unusual and it can be caused by overwatering or due to higher temperatures amongst other factors.

    • Fertilizer – This can be administered once monthly during spring and summer periods. During winter the plant is not as likely to endure growth, therefore, the plant will not absorb the fertilizer.
